Musician's Friend was founded in 1983 by Rob and DeAnna Eastman. It was a modest beginning in which the newly married Eastmans financed the start-up with a $5,000 loan from Rob's parents. As the sole employees operating out of the couple's suburban California garage, their first catalog was a simple two-color flyer offering discounted guitar strings and a handful of other accessories. The company soon prospered relocating to a converted dairy barn in Southern Oregon. By 1989 the company had a handful of employees and stood on the verge of amazingly rapid growth. This success was the result of the Eastman's long hours of hard work and intimate knowledge of the music business. It was also a matter of fortuitous timing. Musician's Friend was among the earliest catalog marketers of music gear and the first to focus on rock-band gear. The company's early years coincided with an explosion in the popularity of rock music and the development of exciting new music gear. Rock-and-roll was conquering the world and Musician's Friend, on the way to becoming the world's largest direct marketer of music gear, was equipping the conquerors. As the Internet has become an increasingly important way for Musician's Friend to reach customers, the company has led the way in creating a musician-friendly website that makes the process of finding and ordering the right gear a matter of a few clicks. With the advent of Web 2.0, Musician's Friend is devoting substantial resources to providing customers with custom-tailored shopping experiences that reflect their specific musical interests. Today, Musician's Friend is a music business success story. The company has over 1,000 employees; headquarters in Medford, Oregon; a call center in Salt Lake City; and a state-of-the-art distribution center in Kansas City that's the size of 13 football fields.
